Membership Requirements

New Members— Qualified students are selected from those who are registered for the Fall or Spring semesters.  Membership is not open during the Summer and Winter sessions. If qualified for membership, a PTK Advisor will invite students via email at the beginning of the fall and spring semester.

Qualifications

1.      Cumulative GPA: Grades in all courses taken while the student was actively enrolled at Bergen Community College will be considered in determining the qualifying cumulative GPA of new members and the retention of continuing members. Each candidate for membership must achieve the following cumulative GPA based on college-level degree credits earned:

  • If the student has earned between 12-15 college-level credits, they must have a 3.75 to 4.0 cumulative GPA.

  • If the student has earned between 16-31 college-level credits, they must have a 3.70 to 4.0 cumulative GPA.

  • If the student has earned between 32-48 college-level credits, they must have a 3.65 to 4.0 cumulative GPA.

  • If a student has earned more than 48 college-level credits, they must have a minimum 3.60 cumulative GPA.

Students in the following degree programs are eligible for continued and new membership: A.A. Degree, A.S. Degree, A.A.S. Degree.

2.      Good Moral Character – Students must be of good moral character and must adhere to the Student Code of Conduct of Bergen Community College.

Continued Membership— Once inducted into Alpha Epsilon Phi, members must maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.50 and continue to follow Bergen Community College’s Student Code of Conduct. If a student’s cumulative GPA falls below a 3.50, the student will be placed on probation for one semester immediately following GPA drop. If student fails to raise their cumulative GPA to 3.50 after this semester of probation, they will lose his or her Phi Theta Kappa status through the national headquarters.

Alumni Membership— An alumnus member shall be a former member of the Society who terminated active membership in good standing and who was enrolled for at least one year in a two-year college. Alumni members have full privileges of active members except the right to vote or the right to hold office.
