The Spina Bifida Resource Network aims to raise awareness about the birth defect of Spina Bifida. Its goal includes increasing the education of college students, through peer to peer interaction, about the benefits of healthy living NOW to prevent birth defects in the future. Since research has shown that taking steps to improve current health also contributes toward reducing birth defects in the future, the organization hopes to encourage people to implement healthy behaviors, such as getting enough folic acid, maintaining a healthy weight and being careful with alcohol and drugs. Research reveals that the population of college students are least likely to be aware of how taking folic acid before pregnancy can reduce birth defects. It also shows that this population is the least likely to take vitamin supplements. Therefore, the Spina Bifida Resource Network wants to reach out to college students before they would become parents in the future.
Volunteers would distribute some pamphlets as well as speak to students about strategies they may implement to improve their health habits.
